ADVENT

A JOURNEY

Advent is the four-week season leading up to Christmas in the Christian calendar, a time of anticipation, preparation, and longing. The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival.” It invites believers to remember the first coming of Jesus as a humble baby in Bethlehem, and at the same time to look forward to His promised return as King and Lord. Advent is marked by themes of hope, peace, joy, and love—each week symbolized by the lighting of candles that push back the darkness with growing light. It reminds us to slow down, reflect, and make room in our hearts for Christ.

ADVENT CALLS YOU!

Advent is both celebration and expectation—a season that calls us to wait with faith, hope, and readiness for God’s continued work in our lives and in the world.

A SEASON OF HOPE

Advent marks the beginning of the Christian year and spans the four weeks before Christmas. The word Advent means “coming,” reminding believers to reflect on the anticipation that surrounded Jesus’ birth. Just as Israel longed and waited for the Messiah, Advent invites us to hope in God’s promises today. It teaches us that God always fulfills His word, even when the waiting feels long.

TIME TO PREPARE

While Christmas often becomes busy with preparation for festivities, Advent calls us to spiritual preparation. It is a deliberate season of slowing down, praying, and making room for Christ in our lives. Instead of only preparing our homes for the holiday, Advent encourages us to prepare our hearts—confessing distractions and refocusing on what truly matters. It is an invitation to welcome Jesus personally and deeply.

LOOK BACK AND FORWARD

Advent holds a beautiful tension: we remember Christ’s first coming in Bethlehem, and we look forward to His second coming in glory. It reminds us that Jesus has already come as Savior, but He will come again as King. Each candle in the Advent wreath symbolizes this growing light in the darkness—hope, peace, joy, and love. Advent trains our eyes to see God's activity in the present and to live with expectation for the future.
