When we meditate or pray we want to create a place that's quiet and where we are alone. We don't want to have any external distractions. Also, quieting the mind is critical. Often our minds are racing to the next meeting or responsibility we have. Take that deep breath and let there be no other distractions.
When you pray we must be open to what God is trying to say to us. Often we go into prayer with an agenda. When we are open to new things God is trying to teach us then we put God in control of our lives and not our own will.
This is such an important step for us all. When we ask questions we know we have a God that will answer. Let your questions not be tests, but instead questions that will reveal God's will in your life. Don't be afraid of asking the hard questions either. Those tend to be the most revealing.
God will speak the truth into our lives if we are patient. Sometimes it is the voice of a friend, spouse, or family member. Sometimes a complete stranger. Other times "doors" might open to us at just the right moment. Either way we must pay attention and receive the Good News God is bringing us.
The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:5-7

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8
