Yesterday I read about a Doctor of the Church, Saint Catherine of Siena. Her theological insight made such an impact in the mid 1300s that she made history as one of the most influential leaders of the Universal Church. She spoke with courage and wisdom during a time of civil unrest, political division (in Italy and the church), plague, and overall unrest.
Last October I walked the hills and winding streets of Siena. I visited the Basilica of San Domenico in her hometown of Siena, Italy and the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, Italy, where her remains rest. I did not know who she was until I read her story.
I didn't sleep much last night. It was as if the scenes of a history book played through my thoughts. I could see the very places that she penned her thoughts, spoke of living a life with Christ crucified, and made history among women that have carried the Gospel message boldly. I could smell the dampness of the streets where she cared for the sick and dying. I heard the sounds of the church bells ringing across the winding streets of Siena and wondered how many times she heard them. I walked the stone streets where she walked with her Lord and her thoughts of Him. I stood in the Basilicas where she prayed and taught.
I was overwhelmed by the connection of her story and seeing where she became an “accidential theologian”. I wonder how often we miss the depth of another human being because we fail to learn their story. We pick up sound bites, listen to rumor or gossip, make assumptions, form an opinion based on commentary, etc. Maybe the richness of traveling this world comes to life when we start learning and listening to another person’s story and their journey?
Just something to think about!
Have a fabulous Sunday!
