The Sacred Art of Waiting
"Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him." Psalm 37:7
Dietrich Bonhoeffer once wrote, "Waiting is an art that our impatient age has forgotten. It wants to break open the ripe fruit when it has hardly finished planting the shoot. But all too often the greedy eyes are only deceived; the fruit that seemed so precious is still green on the inside, and disrespected hands ungratefully toss aside what has so disappointed them."
Bonhoeffer's words remind us that waiting is not wasted time, it is holy time. In our fast-paced, results-driven world, we often mistake God's silence for absence, or His timing for delay. But waiting, in the life of faith, is not passive; it's active trust.
When a farmer plants a seed, they don't stand over the soil demanding growth. They water, tend, and trust the process. Likewise, when we wait on God, we cultivate faith, hope, and patience. The waiting seasons are when God is most at work shaping our character, deepening our dependence, and preparing us for fruit that lasts.
We often want to "break open the ripe fruit," forcing outcomes, answers, or opportunities before their time. But premature fruit—like Bonhoeffer warns—is green on the inside. What looks promising can turn bitter when we grasp instead of trusting.
The truth is, God never wastes a waiting season. Abraham waited for the promise. Joseph waited in prison. David waited to be king. Mary waited for the Savior to be born. And Jesus Himself waited—thirty years before His public ministry, three days in the tomb before resurrection glory.
Waiting refines our desires until they align with God's. It transforms impatience into intimacy and longing into listening.
Today, instead of asking "When, Lord?" ask "What are You forming in me while I wait?" Let your waiting be worship. Let your stillness be faith in motion.
Lord, teach me the art of waiting. When I'm tempted to rush ahead, remind me that You are working even when I can't see it. Help me trust Your timing, tend to my heart, and let patience have its perfect work in me. May my waiting become a place of growth, peace, and a deeper relationship with You. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen!
