There’s something ancient and sacred about a candle. Long before electricity lit our homes, candles pushed back the darkness. They were made from beeswax, tallow, and oils collected through hard work, each one a small reminder of provision. Candles illuminated late-night studies, warmed dinner tables, and guided travelers home. They marked celebrations, sacred milestones, and moments of stillness in God's presence.
Throughout history, a single candle could transform a space. Darkness retreats instantly when just one light is struck. A room once filled with uncertainty becomes a place where faces can be seen, paths can be found, and hope can be felt. A candle’s flame does something to our spirit. Its gentle flicker awakens a sense of peace and presence. The lighting of candles reminds us of celebrations, remembrance, and special occasions.
Lighting a candle can change more than a room.
It can change a heart.
It can shift an atmosphere.
It can spark a memory of comfort or love.
In Scripture, Jesus declares a truth that reminds us of the gift of His light: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
When we light a candle, it reminds us that Jesus stepped into our darkness to guide us into life. His light brings clarity where confusion once lived. It comforts us in grief. It gives direction when we feel lost. Even when life feels overshadowed by hardship, His light is never overcome.
Think about it:
A tiny flame can transform a room.
The Light of Christ can transform a life.
Jesus also said:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16.
We may think our light is not enough. But like a candle in a dark room, God can use even the slightest flicker of faith to shine hope for someone else. A kind word. A prayer whispered for a friend. A simple act of love. It matters. Every flame spreads the light that can transform the darkness.
Lord Jesus, Light of the World, thank You for stepping into our darkness and filling our hearts with hope. When we feel overwhelmed, remind us that Your light within us is powerful. Help us shine with Your love so that others may see Your goodness and find their way to You. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
