"Wet Rag"

We all know what a wet rag feels like—heavy, lifeless, and without shape or purpose. It’s something that’s been soaked and used, and now hangs there, dripping and useless. There are days when our spirit can feel just like that; saturated with too much, soaking wet by circumstances, and without the energy to bounce back. Maybe it’s the weight of responsibilities, disappointments, grief, or even the quiet ache of spiritual fatigue.

The Psalmist knew this feeling well: “My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you” Psalm 42:6. Even in weariness, he makes a choice: to remember. That’s the pivot point between being heavy and exhausted or wrung out and renewed. When we begin to remember God’s faithfulness, His provision, His mercy, and His promises, something within us begins to shift. Gratitude rehydrates the soul. What was heavy begins to lift. What felt lifeless starts to move again.

Gratefulness doesn’t ignore our exhaustion; it is the action that actually squeezes out the negative, heavy, soaking thoughts that weigh us down. Gratefulness points our eyes back to the One who gives rest to the weary and strength to the weak. Gratitude doesn’t require us to feel strong; it simply invites us to recognize and remember that God is still good, even when we feel like a wet rag. When we pause to thank God, even in the midst of our challenges, we release the heaviness and make space for the refreshing water of His Spirit.
Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Maybe that’s the invitation today, to bring your soggy, spent, heavy spirit to the Lord and let Him lift it in His hands. Let Him hang it in His light and breathe new life into it because gratitude squeezes out the heaviness of life and makes room for God to renew our spirit.
